How Turo Insurance Works for Hosts

How Turo insurance works for hosts: a host photographs a rental car's front bumper with a phone before a trip, the record Turo needs for a damage claim

If you host cars on Turo, "how does Turo insurance work?" has a short answer: coverage runs trip by trip, applies to Turo bookings only, and trades earnings against risk. This guide is for hosts running several cars; guests renting a car want Turo's guest protection plans page.

A naming note: on January 7, 2026, Turo replaced its five US host protection plans with three earnings plans (Turo, New and upcoming on Turo). This guide uses both names.

What Turo's Three Host Protection Plans Cover

Every plan includes third-party liability insurance, physical damage reimbursement and basic roadside assistance. Figures are Turo's own, checked October 2, 2026 (Turo host insurance page; Turo, Earnings plans in detail).

Turo's three US host earnings plans compared
PlanHost share of trip priceDamage responsibility per claimThird-party liability
More peace of mind70%$250Up to $750,000
Balanced80%$1,500Up to $750,000
More earnings90%$2,750Up to $750,000

Two things never change. Liability tops out at $750,000 on all three, and damage reimbursement is capped at the car's actual cash value or $200,000, whichever is lower. The decision is the trade: keep 10 more points of every trip and carry more of each claim, or the reverse. Across a fleet, that comes down to how many $2,750 claims a year your cash flow can absorb.

Exceptions: some states and airports require higher liability limits, New York cars default to the state minimum, and in nine markets, including Austin, Las Vegas and Maui, your share varies with booking lead time.

Protection Plan or Insurance? The Difference That Matters

A Turo plan bundles two parts, and each has a different legal form.

So Turo liability insurance answers third-party claims, while damage to your own car runs on Turo's contract: its definitions, its exclusions, and its choice to pay the repair or the car's actual cash value.

Claims follow those terms: time-stamped photos within 24 hours before the trip and after it ends, with location data attached, then a Turo associate follows up within 1 to 3 days.

What Turo's Plans Do Not Cover

Turo's terms leave these out:

  • Wear and tear, including exterior dings and scratches 3 inches across or smaller.
  • Loss of hosting income while the car is in the shop.
  • A replacement vehicle during repairs.
  • Diminished value after a repair, and mechanical failure.
  • Damage to your car while you deliver it. A booked delivery carries liability cover only.
  • Any trip booked outside Turo. The plans attach to a Turo reservation, so a direct booking sits entirely outside them.

What Changes Once You Take Bookings Direct

Here is how Turo's insurance works once you also book direct: the plan follows the booking. A Turo trip stays covered; a direct trip on the same car carries no Turo coverage. Every car that takes direct bookings needs commercial coverage for those trips before the first one.

Zilarent's two-way Turo calendar sync lets one car take both kinds of booking without double-booking, and its Turo trips stay on Turo's plans. For the direct side, Zilarent makes free introductions, in every US state, to insurance companies that cover car rental businesses. Zilarent is not an insurer or a licensed agent, so confirm terms with a licensed provider, including how a policy treats a car that also runs Turo trips.

To hand off the build, see a done-for-you move off Turo: your own booking site, synced with Turo, live in 5 to 7 business days. Zilarent's car rental software for operators going private is $299/month plus a 6% booking fee on bookings made through your site; see pricing.

Common Questions

How does Turo insurance work if a guest damages my car?

Take time-stamped photos within 24 hours of trip start and trip end, then report the damage. A Turo associate follows up within 1 to 3 days. You pay your plan's damage responsibility ($250, $1,500 or $2,750); Turo reimburses eligible repairs above it, up to the car's actual cash value or $200,000, whichever is lower.

Does my personal auto policy cover my car during a Turo trip?

Usually not. Turo's terms note that many personal auto policies exclude peer-to-peer car sharing, so yours likely does not insure the car during a trip, delivery included. Some policies do, so ask your insurer directly.

Which of the Turo host protection plans suits a host with several cars?

All three Turo host protection plans share the same liability limit and damage cap, so the choice is earnings against risk per claim. Multiply your expected damage claims per year by each plan's damage responsibility, and compare that with the extra trip revenue the higher plans pay.

Does Turo's plan cover a car when I book it direct?

No. Turo's plans cover trips booked through Turo. A direct booking needs its own commercial coverage, even on a car still listed on Turo. Zilarent makes free introductions, in every US state, to insurance companies that cover car rental businesses, for your private and direct rentals.
